You are kindly invited to Elise Kolen’s lecture “Beyond Reality: Analysing the regulatory framework for combating non-consensual sexually explicit AI-generated deepfakes in the metaverse”, which will take place in the framework of the Tuesday Meetings next Tuesday, 16 July 2024 at 11:00 in the library of the Institute of Criminology. The lecture will be held in English.
The lecture will explore the intersection of new technologies and gender-based violence. Over the past year, non-consensual sexually explicit deepfakes have significantly impacted both famous and non-famous women and girls. As virtual worlds like the metaverse expand, so do the challenges of protecting users from these harmful deepfakes. This talk will delve into the potential harms of deepfakes in virtual spaces and the complexities of regulation and enforcement. It will address critical questions about personhood, harm, perpetrator identification, and jurisdiction, while proposing innovative legal and regulatory frameworks to safeguard users.
Elise Kolen LLM is currently finishing up her year at the EMA Human Rights and Democratisation programme at the Global Campus of Human Rights. She researches and is interested in the intersection of law and technology, women and minority rights.
