Visiting Scholars Programme at the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law University of Ljubljana
The Institute welcomes applications for its Visiting Scholars Programme, designed to foster international collaboration and innovative research in criminology and related fields.
Our programme offers a stimulating environment for scholars to engage with our vibrant academic community, share ideas, and advance their work.
Who Can Apply?
We invite applications from:
- Scholars at all stages of their academic careers, including established academics, early-career researchers, and PhD students in criminology, law, sociology, psychology, and related disciplines.
- Academics pursuing research that aligns with the Institute’s core areas of expertise across the main fields of criminology, including criminal justice systems, crime prevention, sentencing and corrections, comparative criminology, the sociology of law, the intersections of crime, law, and society, the impact of technology on criminal justice and legal systems, and the relationship between democracy, rule of law, and criminal justice. Research areas that reflect the specific expertise of individual scholars at the Institute are also welcome.
What We Offer
- Access to our facilities, including desk space in the library, library resources, and seminar rooms.
- Opportunities to contribute to the Institute’s research through published articles, data-sharing, co-authorship with our staff, or interviews with key figures in the field.
- An expectation to present your research at our regular seminars, typically held shortly after your arrival. You will be asked to provide a title, a short abstract, and a photo in preparation for the presentation.
- A chance to have your work highlighted on our website, including a short introduction of yourself and the purpose of your visit.
- Opportunities to engage with the Institute’s research activities, workshops, and seminars.
- A platform to present and receive feedback on your research.
- Networking opportunities with our academic community and external collaborators.
Please note: While the Institute strives to support visiting scholars, funding is not guaranteed. Limited financial assistance may be available upon application to help cover travel expenses, accommodation, or research-related costs. External funding is strongly encouraged and may be supplemented by Institute’s co-funding.
Duration of Stay
Scholars are welcome to visit for periods of up to one year, depending on the scope of their research and the availability of resources.
Application Process
The Visiting Scholars Programme accepts applications on a rolling basis. To apply, please submit:
- A cover letter outlining your research interests and how they align with the Institute’s work.
- A detailed research proposal (maximum 5 pages).
- Your CV, including a list of publications.
- Indication of the proposed dates of your visit.
A financial plan of the visit, including information about your funding status, covering your own resources and specifying the expected contribution from the Institute, if you are applying for financial assistance.
Application Review
Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis by our academic committee. Applicants can typically expect to receive a decision within 4–6 weeks of submission. Selection criteria include:
- Relevance and quality of the proposed research.
- Potential for collaboration with the Institute’s researchers.
Feasibility of completing the research within the proposed timeframe. Availability of co-funding, ensuring an appropriate combination of your own resources and the support requested from the Institute, while considering the total number of visiting scholars and available resources at the Institute.
