Dr. Lior Volinz, researcher at the Institute of Criminology, organized a double session panel on the Digital Welfare State at the VSR  – Dutch and Flemish Law and Society – conference in Leiden, the Netherlands. The panel, on January 30th 2025, included contributions by 6 authors: Rana Kuseyri (Utrecht University), Malou Beck (Tilburg University), Marijke Roosen (OsloMet), Maarten Bouwmeester (University of Groningen), Janne Petroons (KULeuven), and Lior Volinz (Institute of Criminology). The panel addressed topics such as welfare surveillance, the criminalization of welfare claimants, automation of social workers’ decision making process and digital literacy.
Volinz’s project, supported by a MSCA-ERA grant, researches how social institutions use surveillance technologies and practices to detect possible incidents of fraud and automate eligibility tests.
