The lecture titled LAW BETWEEN PSYCHOANALYSIS, NEUROSCIENCE and GENETICS will be held at the Faculty of Law “Iustinianus Primus” – Skopje on 17 October, 19.30.
Professor Renata Salecl is a senior researcher in criminology at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana and has recently been appointed as a Professor of Psychology/Psychoanalysis and Law in the School of Law at Birkbeck in London. She is a leading scholar on the subject of psychoanalysis and law and has a long association with the critical legal studies movement. Was awarded the title Slovenian Woman Scientist of the Year by the Slovenian Ministry of Science in 2010.
Professor Salecl is author of many scientific texts, and also of the following very influential books: The Spoils of Freedom: Psychoanalysis and Feminism After the Fall of Socialism (Routledge, 1994), (Per)versions of Love and Hate (Verso, 1998), On Anxiety (Routledge, 2004) and Tyranny of Choice (Profile Books, 2010).

LAW BETWEEN PSYCHOANALYSIS, NEUROSCIENCE and GENETICS
People differently relate to law: some are oblivious to social prohibitions; others constantly feel guilty; still others claim they have committed a crime when in reality they did not do anything wrong; and some even inflict punishment onto themselves. Psychoanalysis can help lawyers understand such different responses to legal prohibitions by looking at different ways people through the process of socialization internalize social norms. It can help us understanding the enjoyment of transgression and the anxiety in front of the law. But did something change in people’s relationship to law when subjectivity is more and more defined in biological terms and less by looking at the unconscious mechanisms that psychoanalysis perceives as crucial for understanding our actions? The lecture will explore the rise of neuroscience and genetics in today’s legal domain and question how psychoanalysis can respond to the search for the truth in the body.
