We kindly invite you to a lecture by Dr. <\/b><\/span>Brian<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Barry <\/span><\/strong>entitled \u201c<\/span>AI for assisting judicial decision-making: challenges and opportunities<\/b>\u201d<\/span><\/b>, which will take place as part of Tuesday Meetings on Tuesday, 11 November 2025, at 15.00<\/strong>pm in the library of the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana.<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

AI is changing the nature of judicial decision-making. <\/strong>The Council of Europe\u2019s Resource Centre on Cyberjustice and AI identifies 34 AI-based decision-support tools for judges across Europe, alongside growing use of general-purpose AI systems. This presentation examines the state-of-the-art and its impact on justice, with particular focus on AI in sentencing and other criminal law contexts.The presenter will draw from his recent research, including a chapter in the Cambridge Handbook of\u00a0AI and Technologies in Courts (forthcoming, April 2026) and experimental studies on what features of AI systems for assisting judicial decision-making drive legitimacy. Dr. Brian Barry<\/strong> is Associate Professor in the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin, where he teaches and supervises in AI regulation and AI for law. His research investigates decision-making in justice systems through multiple disciplinary lenses and technologies for judging. He is the author of\u00a0<\/span>How Judges Judge: Empirical Insights into Judicial Decision-Making<\/em>\u00a0(Informa Law from Routledge, 2021) and numerous peer-reviewed articles. His research has been cited by leading courts, including the Irish Supreme Court and the Australian Federal Court, and he regularly delivers training to judges and adjudicators in various judicial and quasi-judicial bodies.<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
