At the Eurocrim conference in Athens, members of the research team presented the first phase of the project, in which they used artificial intelligence to map the research field of sentencing decision-making.

How? They used artificial intelligence to create an interactive map that connects research, methods and ideas on sentencing from law, psychology, sociology, decision theory and other fields. Instead of a static overview, this approach creates a dynamic network of papers that can be searched, filtered and visualized according to a wide range of properties, opening up new ways of understanding connections and gaps in the field.

In this way, in future steps, they will be able to identify and analyze (hidden) factors that influence sentencing decision-making, and determine which elements of the “sentencing environment” are well defined in the literature – and where there are potential gaps or overlooked topics.
